Three Story House

Act II

A new day. ABIGAIL enters the den and starts setting up. A beat. RICHARD enters. Abigail, expecting to see Derry, is a little stunned.

RICHARD
Who are you?

ABIGAIL
Hi, I’m–

RICHARD
How’d you get into my house?

ABIGAIL
Your house?

RICHARD
Yes, my house. My home. My property. Who are you?!

ABIGAIL
It’s okay. I’m Abigail.

RICHARD
And why are you here?!

ABIGAIL
I’m here to talk to you.

RICHARD
What do you mean?

ABIGAIL
I’m a therapist.

RICHARD
Stop lying.

ABIGAIL
I’m not lying. Do you want to see my business card?

RICHARD
Actually, I would.

Abigail goes to her bag and takes one out to show to Richard. She holds it out and Richard stalks forward menacingly. Abigail takes a step back, out of nervous habit. Richard scoffs at her. He glances at the card, but not long enough before staring at Abigail again.

RICHARD
What are you doing here?

ABIGAIL
Like I said, I came to talk to you.

RICHARD
Who sent you?

ABIGAIL
Someone else in the house–

RICHARD
Was it Tricia?

ABIGAIL
I can’t disclose–

RICHARD
She should mind her own damn business! I don’t need some fat goth bitch to talk to me about my feelings.

ABIGAIL
You admit you have feelings.

RICHARD
I’m feeling angry now.

ABIGAIL
That’s a good step in the right direction.

RICHARD
I don’t need you to condescend–

ABIGAIL
Listen, are you going to let me do my job? You don’t have to share secrets, talk about anything you don’t want to.

RICHARD
I don’t want to talk now.

ABIGAIL
But I’m going to keep bothering you until you decide to talk to me about something.

RICHARD
(grumbles) Son of a…Fine. If I’ve gotta do this. (sits down) What questions do you have, doctor?

ABIGAIL
Just Abigail.

RICHARD
Just Richard, nice to meet you. Where do you want to start?

ABIGAIL
First of all, I want to commend you on your home. It’s beautiful; I’m really enamored by it. How’d you get this house?

RICHARD
I thought you were a therapist, not an architect.

ABIGAIL
I can be interested. Also, it’s a good ice breaker.

RICHARD
(sighs) My wife and I bought this a few years ago.

ABIGAIL
You’re from out of town originally?

RICHARD
No. Just got a different house, same town.

ABIGAIL
Tricia wanted to stay put?

RICHARD
Rosie and I didn’t want to pull Tricia out of school and plop her in a different school somewhere else. Plus, Rosie wanted to stay near her family that also live around here.

ABIGAIL
Oh, okay. Would you have wanted to move to a different town?

RICHARD
I didn’t care about moving. This house wasn’t about moving for the sake of a bigger or better house.

ABIGAIL
What was it about?

RICHARD
Mine and Rosie’s marriage.

ROSIE, a bright woman in her 40’s, enters, looking at a piece of paper. Richard moves downstage to her.
